I’m enamored with the idea of this, since I have long bleached blonde hair and constantly struggle with split ends even with my routine salon visits. I think using both the Overnight and Split Ends mask will really help my hair in-between appointments. This mask is enriched with nourishing ingredients like Shea Butter, Hydrolyzed Keratin and Keratin Amino Acids that work to strengthen and maintain healthy hair.
However, after looking closer at the ingredients and doing a bit of research, I discovered that this mask contains silicones such as Cyclopentasiloxane and Dimethicone while the (Step 2) serum contains both of those as well, plus Amodimethicone and Cyclohexasiloxane. I am disappointed because the SNP Overnight Mask contained none of these. While on one hand, silicones can benefit hair by making it easier to detangle and seal in moisture, on the other most silicones are not water soluble and therein lies the problem. Without it being able to dissolve it builds up and dries your hair out, weighs it down, prevents conditioners and other moisturizers to penetrate strands and is hard to remove, therefore causing more breakage. So, I’m going to fully try it out, but I’m not sure if I’d frequently use it.
The directions are clearly labeled in both words and diagrams. Begin with completely dry hair, as this is recommended so that you can style and go forth with your day, but I can see doing this whenever if you’re not going out. To begin, you simply put your hair in a ponytail and take out the mask from the top portion of the package clearly labeled Step 1 Restorative Mask.
In my opinion the overall shape of the mask looks like a mermaid tail, so take the tail ends (or bunny ears if you prefer) and split them apart along the perforated line.
Now pull the flaps apart and open up the mask. Then, turn the mask inside out, just like you would if you were picking up dog poo in your back yard (yes, this is exactly what I thought, 😂).
Now that the animal print is over your hand, grasp your hair (I wadded most of what I could in my hand) and pull the mask right side out to capture all of your hair. Since I have long hair it took some extra work to push the length of it into the pouch.
Voila! Now it’s time to tie up the bunny ears to secure the mask in place. After I tied it up, I did make sure to squish and distribute the product as well as possible using my hands to make sure I was actually targeting the ends. At this point it dawned on me that the pouch may not really work as well for those with shorter hair, because most, if not all of the product is all the way in the bottom where the ends may not reach. It seems like there should be an extra step here to allow product to be worked into the hair with the hands (like in the Overnight Mask) before putting on the masking pouch.
I love the adorable little otter pattern and how comfortable it sits with all of my 24+ inches of hair inside. Be sure to wait the recommended time of 10-15 minutes, just like doing a face mask, only for your hair. I think this is a perfect amount of time that allows you to get your makeup ready for the day. There is an obvious baby-product scent to the pouch, but in case you’re sensitive to it, I’m glad to report that none of it was left behind on my hair afterward.
After the time was up, my ends felt hydrated, smoother, and much easier to brush. The Step 2 Serum is intended to provide volume, strengthen and give a healthy glossy appearance to your hair. It’s really easy to do this part, since all you have to do is work the serum into your ends with your hands.
I think it resulted in a nice shine, but I can see that if I’m not careful with how much I use, it could leave my hair weighed down and oily. Furthermore, instead of using this 2-3 times a week, I would recommend once every other week to avoid buildup of the silicone. I hope that SNP will move to a fully silicone free version of this product in the future, to bypass these negative side effects since I love everything else about it.
I have feeling this might be sold at Walmart just like the Overnight Hair Mask according to 0.8L. I couldn’t find online so maybe it’s only found in-store. I recommend that everyone give this unique hair masking a go and reap the benefits for themselves!
